Storage Tank Management
Storage Tank Management

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the MDEQ have strict requirements for underground storage tank (UST) owners to manage their tank facilities.

In many cases, the best management option is to close old or out of service USTs. USEPA and many states have specific UST closure requirements.  Our staff is comprised of Professional Engineers (PE), Certified Professional Geologists (CPG), and Certified Underground Storage Tank Professionals (CUSTPs) whom have demonstrated sufficient experience and proficiency in UST management and site closure on hundreds of former and current LUST sites. AKT Peerless' entire staff has attended and completed OSHA's required 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) and the annual 8-hour refresher course.

Legislation allowing the use of risk-based corrective action (RCBA) has provided a powerful tool to close contaminated UST sites, often with less remedial activity that before.AKT Peerless has experience to comply with different state UST closure requirements.

AKT Peerless has completed UST closures in Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio. For example in Michigan, AKT Peerless is certified by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's (MDEQ's) Storage Tank Division as a Qualified Underground Storage Tank Consultant (QUSTC). UST owners and operators in Michigan must utilize a QUSTC to develop and manage corrective action at Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) sites.

AKT Peerless' is experienced in the following areas of UST management:

  • UST compliance review and recommendations
  • Investigating and closing LUST sites
  • UST removal
  • Upgrading existing USTs
  • Risk Based Corrective Action at LUST sites
