Flint River Redevelopment, Flint, MI

Environmental investigation and PFAS assessment services supporting riverfront restoration and public park redevelopment in Michigan.

THE PROJECT

Genesee County Parks initiated a redevelopment effort along portions of the Flint River in downtown Flint, Michigan to create new open green space, public parks, and an improved river corridor. The project is intended to enhance public access to the river and support long-term community and environmental benefits in the downtown area.

The redevelopment area is located downstream of the former Buick City property, where PFAS contamination was previously identified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) in 2018. Due to the proximity of the redevelopment to known PFAS sources, environmental evaluation was required to support safe construction activities and future public use of the park areas.

OUR ROLE

AKT Peerless conducted a PFAS-focused environmental investigation of the Flint River redevelopment area to evaluate soil, groundwater, and river sediment conditions. Services included preparation of an EGLE-approved work plan, installation of monitoring wells, and collection of soil, groundwater, and sediment samples in accordance with EGLE PFAS sampling protocols.

AKT Peerless evaluated investigation results and prepared a site-specific plan to prevent unreasonable exposure during construction and long-term public use of the redeveloped park areas. Findings were incorporated into a Documentation of Due Care plan to demonstrate compliance with Section 20107a(1) of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act (NREPA), Public Act 451 of 1994, as amended, during and after redevelopment activities.

results

AKT Peerless’ environmental investigation provided critical data to support informed decision-making for the Flint River riparian redevelopment. PFAS conditions were evaluated and documented, and site-specific due care measures were developed to protect construction workers and future park users.

Through regulatory-compliant investigation and planning, AKT Peerless helped advance a riverfront restoration project that supports public recreation, environmental stewardship, and safe reuse of impacted areas.
