Former La-Z-Boy Manufacturing Facility, Monroe, Michigan

Pre-demolition Asbestos and Hazardous Materials Services for former La-Z-Boy facility.

THE PROJECT

The City of Monroe will demolish the former La-Z-Boy manufacturing facility at 1284 N. Telegraph Road in preparation for site redevelopment. The 16-acre site includes three buildings with multiple construction dates between 1927 and 1954, including the main manufacturing building and a powerhouse. The buildings total approximately 237,000 square feet.

OUR ROLE

AKT Peerless conducted a pre-demolition asbestos identification survey to comply with National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) standards. In addition to asbestos identification, AKT Peerless also inventoried other environmentally regulated materials (hazmat) that require removal in advance of building demolition. Upon completion of the asbestos and hazmat inventories, AKT Peerless prepared technical abatement specifications and assisted the City of Monroe with environmental abatement and demolition contractor bidding and selection.  During environmental abatement, AKT Peerless will represent the City of Monroe by providing oversight of the processes, air monitoring, reconciliation of environmental material quantities removed, and final clearance testing.

THE RESULTS

AKT Peerless conducted destructive investigation and identified numerous asbestos and hazardous material sources throughout the buildings at the former La-Z-Boy manufacturing facility that will require removal prior to building demolition. AKT Peerless’ onsite personnel will ensure that removal processes meet regulatory compliance standards.
